When doing User testing, you don't need to test a large number of people.
The most effective approach for formative testing (testing during the design process) is :

1. Gather data from a few participants.
2. Analyze the findings.
3. Apply the insights accordingly.

Then, identify any new questions that emerge and those that still need answers, and repeat the process again and again and again...
